Abstract |
Background. The article for the first time analyzes the traditions of the famous poem by S. T. Coleridge «The Rime of the Ancient Mariner» (1797–1798) rary process in Russia in the late 19th – early 20th centuries that made possible the great popularity of both works and the desire of translators to render them into Russian has been taken into account. The actuality of this investigation is stipulated by growing of the role of international literary and cultural cooperation and the requirement of revelation of the basic tendency of literary interaction and correction of conventional conceptions.
Materials and methods. The analysis was done on the basis of the works of the English writers S. T. Coleridge and O. Wilde and their Russian renderings of the 19th and early 20th century done by F. B. Miller, H. L. Pushkarev, A. A. Korinfsky, N. S. Gumiliov («The Rime of the Ancient Mariner»), K. D. Balmont, M. Likiardopulo, V. Y. Brusov, A. I. Deutch and others («The Ballad of Reading Gaol»). There have been used the methods of comparative historic analysis, and historic typological analyses as well as comparative analysis of poetic works.
Results. One can see the communality of treatment of the idea of suffering and forgiveness; both works use the ballad elements to emphasize the tension and to make the description of torture and pain more monotonous. There is something in common between «The Rime of the Ancient Mariner» by S. T. Coleridge and «The Ballad of Reading Gaol» by O. Wilde and the Russian world outlook which was the main reason for appearing of the translations by F. B. Miller, H. L. Pushkarev, A. A. Korinfsky, N. S. Gumiliov («The Rime of the Ancient Mariner»), K. D. Balmont, M. Likiardopulo, V. Y. Brusov, A. I. Deutch and others («The Ballad of Reading Gaol») in the late 19th – early 20th century.
Conclusions. The comparative analysis of the works of the English authors comes to a conclusion that they have some common thematic and structural features that can be seen in their figurative style, in usage of similar motifs and artistic details.
